Envelope from Launceston to Stoney Creek, Tasmania. At centre is a DETAINED FOR/FUMIGATION hand stamp. In 1903 there was a smallpox epidemic in the Launceston area. There were 66 cases; 20 people died. The disease was attributed to a travelling performer who contracted smallpox on a tour in India. The Examiner newspaper advised that all mail, including newspapers, would be fumigated for two hours before delivery to the addressee. RARE.
